St. Ann's Bay Development Association
Meeting of 16 January 2008
In attendance:
Yves Despois, Carol Kennedy, Dennis Laffan, Marcelle
Lavoie, Ernie MacAulay, Chrissie MacEachern,
John G. MacInnis, Ruth Schneider, Andy Watt,
Susan Zettell
1) Minutes of September 11, 2007:
Approved (moved: Ruth; seconded: Susan)
2) Old business:
- North River Signage—Aaron has seen
to it.
- North Shore School—the County will not sell
waterfront land; however, it could sell the school and
the land it sits on if it were severed from the rest. The
only assessment that was done was done on the entire
piece. The school could be leased, rented, or sold. If
it were leased for commercial purposes, it would have
to be at the commercial rate. If a group were to buy it,
it couldn't be for liquidation purposes. If it were leased,
insurance, taxes, maintenance, etc. would be the
responsibility of the one who leased it. As it is, the
building is disintegrating, and is to be torn down this
spring or summer, but the land will remain in the public
domain.
Motion: That this issue be closed, and
that SABDA be satisfied with the county's plans to tear
down the school, providing the land remain public
property for the community in perpetuity. (moved: Ruth;
seconded: Carol; passed)
- The Little Bit Out There Festival—Penny
Steele was not present to report; however, it seems to
have been a success, and is being planned again for this
coming year.
- Pollett's Cove—SABDA's letter of concern was
sent, and a response was received by DNR Minister
Morse. The land was bought privately by a
local entity.
- Community Arts Award—This award goes to a
community that can demonstrate its support for arts and
culture. Carol and Bev Brett agreed to take this on, and
Bev has done a considerable amount of work. Carol read
part of the outline they are preparing under the
following headings:
. A history of support for and financial
investment in arts and
culture activities
. Arts and culture activities that are
accessible to all
community members
. Excellence and innovation
. Arts and culture activities that are
present in a variety of ways
. Arts and culture activities that are integral
to the community's
identity and
contribute to pride of place
ACTION: Although Bev and Carol have
compiled much evidence of community support under
each of these headings, they would be eager to hear
from anyone who thinks of anything that proves that our
community supports the arts and culture.
- Arboretum—the Arboretum is now registered as
The St. Ann's Bay Arboretum Society. It is the first arboretum
in Nova Scotia. The Red Island Trail is intended to be part of
the arboretum complex. SABDA will put in a tree on
Arbour Day.
3) Finance Report: Chrissie
The SABDA account has $6,820.62. On January 10,
$121.34 was deposited from the South Victoria Development
Association that had been dormant for seven years.
4) New Business:
- Dragon Boat Racing Team—Carol thinks it is more
appropriately sponsored by the Health Centre, and she
will bring it up at the Health Centre meeting. She is willing
to do the application and coach and find a 21 person team.
Anyone interested could contact her.
ACTION: Carol will talk with the Health
Centre Board.
- Red Island Trail—needs volunteers to clear it of
fallen trees.
ACTION: Andy, Yves, Dennis, Susan will
work on the trail this Friday.
- CAP Site—it is apparently only open on part of
the day on Wednesdays. It's dependent on volunteers until
student funding comes in (May). The Gaelic College site is
open daily, thanks to a dedicated volunteer.
ACTION: John G. will talk to Dave Green
about reinvigorating the CAP site, and will get back to
Marcelle in hopes of developing programs that will bring
people in and inspire volunteers.
5) Next Meeting: Tuesday 8 April 2008,
7 pm, at the Health Centre.
ACTION: Marcelle will contact Penny to
get the Health Centre.
