Skills Exchange

Many people in the community have expressed an interest in preserving or recovering the skills and methods of living of the past. For some, this is about keeping history alive. For others, it is insurance against hard times, or a deliberate effort to slow the pace of life, or to keep life more "local".

This page offers you the chance to exchange your skills or your desire to learn with other community residents.

If you have a skill you'd like to pass on, let us know, and we'll put a note on this page for others to see. If there's something you'd love to learn, we'll post that, too.

If you see a match to your skill or interest, you can connect with each other. If there is a lot of interest in something in particular, this could become a venue for setting up a workshop to accommodate the wider demand. There are even some funds available from the Health Centre to help cover expenses, in skills training that crosses generations.

No need to worry that you may not be good enough to "teach". The intent of this exchange is to share and pool our knowledge, and to mentor each other. Often, just an introduction to an idea will get someone started on their own voyage of discovery. Every contribution can do that.

Your privacy:  We do not need both your phone number and your e-mail address, but we do need at least one of these. Before you submit personal information, please be aware that your submission will be published on this page. If you would like to have your submission removed from this page in the future, simply contact us with your request and we will remove it promptly.

You are free to ask about or volunteer any skill. Some ideas that have already been suggested to SABDA include:

  • canning and otherwise preserving foods without freezing or refrigeration
  • selecting foods suitable for storage
  • designing and growing "knot" gardens and other kitchen/herb gardens
  • knitting or crotcheting
  • boat-building
  • use of older, unpowered tools in farming or forestry
  • techniques for designing or building a home to take advantage of natural ventilation, heating, and cooling
  • identifying and using wild plants as foods or medicines
  • making maple syrup
  • step-dancing, story-telling, fiddling, etc. (demonstrating or mentoring)
  • propagating heritage fruit trees

If interest exists, other skills that might be exchanged but that are not necessarily "old" skills include:
